Abstract: Modern challenges in the banking system of Azerbaijan at the new stage of economic development are discussed in the article. For this purpose, the events and processes in the banking system of Azerbaijan connected with the reduction in the price of oil since the middle of 2014 are analyzed. Problems and developments are analyzed in the context of a number of important indicators, reflecting the real situation in the country's banking system. The modern challenges facing the banking system are analyzed taking into account the author's assessment for the near future and long-term perspective. The adequacy of the state and strength of the banking system to the future economic goals and priorities of the country and the expected impacts of global economic, financial processes and trends in the development of the banking system of the world are compared and assessed. A number of proposals and recommendations on challenges to the Azerbaijan banking system in the new economic stage are summarized and given.
