Abstract: The article considers the main components of communicative competence and the role of grammatical competence as one of the important components of language competence. The author studies the peculiarities of formation and development of linguistic and cultural competence among students of pedagogical universities; analyzes the features of expressing stable combinations in English and Russian languages; notes the importance of using phraseological units in English classes in order to increase their knowledge of the language.
