Abstract: The article examines the sources of background knowledge, which include, firstly, traditional culture (texts of fiction, texts of poetry, precedent situations associated with world or national history and culture). Secondly, folk culture (proverbial and proverbial fund, fairy tales, folk songs, counting rhymes and other folklore materials). Thirdly, mass culture (texts of films, cartoons, popular, patriotic songs, lyrics from television and cartoons, precedent situations related to the current moment in the life of society, advertising, children's poems, television and radio broadcasts). It is concluded that at the present time background knowledge related to mass culture is gaining more and more importance.
