Abstract: This article reports an investigation of the role of motion verbs in the representation of emotional states through cross-linguistic observations in French and Uzbek. The study pointed to a wide range of lexical variations in the set of motion verbs that speakers appear to resort to to metaphorically express the subtleties of these emotional states. Moreover, the study revealed clear similarities between the two languages on some aspects of emotion, but also significant differences in other aspects, especially in the range of specification, that is, in the type and number of modes of movement associated with the emotional state. Given the exploratory nature of this pilot study, it was decided to explore this issue further, using a much larger number of subjects and focusing on just one emotion: Happiness.
Key words: happiness, joy, expression, roles of verbs, cross-linguistics, lexical variations.
