Abstract: The article deals with the structure of Persian verbs, i.e. simple, prefixed and compound verbs, as well as verbal phrases, intransitive verbs, prefixed compound verbs and singular intransitive verbs. Their role in the language system and word formation has been discussed. The fact that simple and prefixed verbs in modern Persian are much less common than compound verbs has been substantiated and analyzed based on the views of the scholars of Iranian studies. The paper examines the argument that several meanings are realized by a single verb, and this in turn makes the verb polysemantic is due to the fact that the number of simple and prefixed verbs in Persian is not so large, and that new simple and prefixed verbs almost ceased to be formed. However, it also shows a difference of opinion that the small number of simple verbs in Persian is due to their polysemantic character. Simple verbs are discussed in more detail and their role in word formation is considered in the example of the verb saxtan. It has been found that the verb is involved in the formation of more than 53 new words and over 25 new compound verbs, and actively used as a light verb in the construction of a number of compound verbs.
Key words: simple verbs, prefixed verbs, compound verbs, verbal phrases, intransitive verbs, prefixed compound verbs, singular intransitive verbs, derivatives of the verb saxtan.
