Abstract: The article analyzes examples of the diversity of lexical units as part of the tropes of oxymoron and metaphor in the English language. Lexical stylistic techniques perform an informative function in the text, conveying the connotative meaning and expressive properties of the utterance. The principle of semantic diversity is a very significant factor generating imagery. The trope arises as a result of contextual modification. A metaphor is a product of the interaction of the objective objective-logical meaning of a word and contextual meaning. The formation of new meanings is due to the metaphor. It should be noted that the emergence of a new meaning of lexical units occurs when semantically incompatible elements of a statement are combined. To interpret the meaning of a figurative expression, one should refer to the category of microtext. Then the process of decoding the stylistic device takes place. The imagery of speech is based precisely on the combination of diverse lexical units.

Key words: semantics, lexical stylistic techniques, oxymoron, metaphor, association, contextual modification, connotation, diversity, image, transfer of meaning.
