Abstract: in the article, summing up the consideration of the history of the socio-economic development of Siberia in the post-war period, we will try to answer the question of what place Siberia occupied in the development of Russia in the period under review. Naturally, all the contradictions in Russian history of the 20th century. affected Siberia with particular severity. This is not least due to the fact that for most of the century Siberia remained, in essence, a semi-colony. The region was considered only as a source of various resources, and its people – as a labor force. The scale and value of funds received from Siberia were incomparable with the standard of living of the Siberians themselves. In our opinion, the most important thing for Siberia now is the formation of mechanisms for the effective use in new economic and political conditions of the natural, production, labor and intellectual potential of the region and the advantages of its participation in the all-Russian and international division of labor to improve on this basis the well-being of the population living here. At the same time, this is the main prerequisite for creating a serious all-Russian market. In the near future (5–10 years), Siberia will remain a leader in the Russian Federation in the following industries: oil and gas, coal mining, non-ferrous metallurgy, forestry, woodworking, pulp and paper, and electric power. The mineral resources sector of Siberia will remain the most important factor in the country's development (it provides 50% of budget revenues, 70% of foreign currency entering the country and 100% of revenues to the Reserve Fund and the National Welfare Fund). However, resource projects for the Siberian economy maintain an inertial line of development, and they will not give serious breakthroughs. Consequently, no infrastructural, scientific and educational advance of Siberia will occur in the next ten years unless the leadership of the Russian Federation radically changes its attitude towards Siberia. To achieve economic prosperity for the vast Siberian region, it is necessary to collectively defend its interests at different levels. There is no doubt that Siberia has enormous prospects for economic and social development, and its colossal natural resources, enormous educational, cultural, moral potential could become the basis for the revival of our Fatherland.
