Abstract: The article discusses some of the problems that arise during the preparation and conduct of classes in English as a foreign language in groups of students preparing for testing to assess language competence. The requirements imposed by the American Council for the Teaching of Foreign Languages to determine the level of proficiency in a foreign language are given. The authors consider ways of semanticizing new vocabulary in the language of mass media classes. The article contains recommendations for teachers of English as a foreign language on the methodological organization of classes to prepare foreign students for the successful passing of the test. Different types of pre-text tasks are proposed that contribute to the formation of the meaning of the English word in the student's mind in its full component composition, in which it is in the mind of a native speaker. Students' participation in the discussion of the meaning of the word in the classroom allows them to participate with more confidence in a spontaneous conversation with a tester conducting an interview.
